Why Worship God?

Worship means learning to be with God. An ancient Russian mystic once said that in heaven we will be “clothed in silence.” This terrified me when I first heard it because as a former radio DJ, silence was a death-knell. “Dead air” was to be avoided at all costs. But silence is necessary with respect to God. We enter into worship when we stop talking because God infinitely exceeds all human speech. Worshipping God means allowing His presence to enfold us as that which is most true, most good, and most beautiful.

The Catholic liturgy is meant to be the highest form of worship. So it shouldn’t surprise us then that it draws us in and out of silence. But since God is everywhere, worship is possible in the silence of the heart. Don’t be afraid to intentionally foster silence!

Try this prayer and the “making gains” action below and allow God to make gains in your life.

Prayer:

Lord God, help me worship you in silence. I offer you distracted heart; fill it with your love. Take from me my confused thoughts; order them with your truth. Take my cold and listless desires, and warm them with your divine passion. Kindly grant my soul to be wrapped in your holy and loving silence. Amen.

Making Gains: Spend five minutes in prayerful attentiveness to God’s presence. Set a timer on your phone for five minutes and put it on airplane mode. It’ll help. Begin and end the five minutes with the prayer. Let me know how it goes for you.
